Why we are
Steve Peck
Founder and Trainer
Steve grew up in a family that fostered 54 children over 31 years. During that time, he witnessed firsthand real-world examples of mental ill health: depression, anxiety, psychosis, schizophrenia and drug addiction. It was clear to him from an early age
that the phenomenon of the human mind was driving all actions. Throughout his life,
Steve has endeavoured to understand this mysterious force.
Steve’s journey has seen him study human behaviour in a variety of ways, including a career in the theatre. The stage is a profoundly psychological space, and his 30 years
of performing and directing have yielded insights that he holds dear to this day.
Only in the 21st century has the field of psychology worked to a scientific evidence base.
The 20th century was littered with ideas, theories and therapies that proved harmless at best; lethal, at worst.
We are trained in the The Human Givens Approach to mental and emotional wellbeing. This approach was formulated in the late 1990s and is the world’s first evidence-based, bio-psycho-social model of mental health. It is a holistic approach that doesn’t just put people and their ailments into boxes with labels, but sees how all symptoms connect within a dynamic, organising idea of what we are as
human beings.
Now, these models are available for all of us to upskill and absorb. When our emotional needs are met, our mental health thrives. By knowing what these needs are, and by knowing which resources we possess in order to fulfil them, we are empowered to do just that.
While Steve started delivering mental health training rooted in the Human Givens approach for Suffolk Mind with the express mission to help those in Suffolk to understand common-sense models of mental health, MHS Training goes further.
Mental health is the driver to all human endeavour. Let’s give it the priority it deserves.
We take this same strategy towards cultural change beyond Suffolk into London, the UK and internationally. Our team of
trainers is steeped in the emotional needs and resources and are experienced in building on the model and adapting it to diverse workplace settings, from solicitors, rail/freight companies and hospitals to tech startups, local councils and football clubs. We aim for everyone to have access to the core training of what mental health is and how best to maintain and improve it.
Our mission
MHS Training aims to support a culture of improving mental health within the workplace by accelerating
a deeper understanding of the emotional needs and resources that we all possess.
This enables emotional resources to be better utilised in order for emotional needs to be better met.
Improved mental health for leadership, management and staff brings exceptional performance, profitability and wellbeing.
Ultimately, this facilitates responsible and enterprising stewardship of the world’s resources to serve all
of humanity towards our unique potential.
It may seem ambitious to hope that everyone on the planet will be able to share in these models of understanding, but this model is becoming increasingly adopted and recognised as part of the most evidence-based approach available. You can support us in our aim of improving mental health for all by incorporating our approach into the culture of your organisation.
Realising change through top-down application of sound principles from leadership demonstrates best practice for all to observe.
The approach used in the MHS Training’s Mental Health and Safety Program has been shown to be the most effective way of tackling
the issue of poor mental health and of mitigating its impact on business. If we can apply it to the workplace community, then we have gone some way to empowering all of us to think about and to take care of mental health in a more developed and enlightened way.
